Established in 1994, The Old House
General has resurrected a trade that had been lost to history.
Using traditional methods, true old growth woods and modern materials
we have returned thousands of vintage windows to full function, weather
tightness and beauty. Whether in the field or the shop we believe
that our work is without peer and our customers agree having given
us the Petaluma Heritage Homes Outstanding Professional Preservation
Award for the body of our work in that city. We look forward to helping
you with your window restoration needs.
Retain the value and architectural integrity of your vintage
home or building. The original windows are the best ever made and
deserve a fate better than a trip to the landfill. Restoration
makes sense from a historic and functional perspective.
All vintage windows can be restored and retrofit with sound buffering
and or dual glazed units where appropriate.
The evolution of the modern window since 1950 is a study in planed
obsolescence. Vintage windows built before that time were not only
built to last a lifetime, they were designed to be restored. By
1900, craftsmen had been developing the double hung window for
two hundred and fifty years and other configurations for even longer.
To accept the notion that these windows are somehow inferior to
any widow built today is unfounded. Constructed of old growth wood,
using mortise and tenon joinery and utilizing a balance system
powered by gravity these windows are the finest ever made. Under
all that paint and caulk are windows deserving of a fate better
than a trip to the land fill.
